Workflow
QTIForge turns a text, Markdown, or spreadsheet file into a quiz package you can import straight into Canvas, with no coding and no retyping questions by hand. Here is the whole process, start to finish.
1. Prepare and upload your file
- Write your questions using a QTIForge template, or follow the formatting rules for your file type
- Supported file types: .txt, .md (Markdown),.xlsx, and .csv (Excel or Google Sheets)
- For spreadsheet files, the file name becomes the quiz title in Canvas
- Click Forge to convert
- Converting usually takes a few seconds
2. Fix any errors
- If something is formatted incorrectly, QTIForge lists each problem with a line number or question number
- Fix every listed error in your original file
- Upload the corrected file to try again
3. Download the quiz file
- Once there are no errors, your quiz downloads automatically as
qti.zip
Do not unzip this file. Canvas needs the
.zip exactly as it downloaded.4. Import into Canvas
Option A: Import as a quiz
- Open your Canvas course and go to Settings
- Click Import Course Content
- Choose QTI .zip file from the content type menu
- Upload your
qti.zipand click Import
Option B: Import as an item bank
- Open your Canvas course and go to Item Banks
- Create a new item bank
- Open the ⋯ menu in the top-right corner and choose Import Content
- Upload your
qti.zipand click Import
Good to know
- A QTI file can only be imported into an empty item bank, not one that already contains questions
- Always review the imported questions in Canvas before you publish the quiz
